Catch a Rare View of the Moon in Tokugawa-en

Tokugawa-en will host an o-tsukimi or moon viewing event on Sept. 19 and 20 just in time for the full moon on the 21st with a hopefully post-typhoon clear sky. The garden cooperative organizing the event says it will launch a traditional wooden boat in the garden’s koi pond and also illuminate the gardens and building nearby the water.

One can sit down anywhere to enjoy looking at the full moon with an urban or natural landscape frame, but the Tokugawa-en garden provides a very traditional view owing to its roots as the private garden of families that ruled the Owari District since the 17th Century. Designed in the Ikezumi style which allows one to walk around through the garden, it also features a small waterfall which feeds the pond.

Entry to the garden costs 300 yen and is free for children up to junior high school ages. If you travel by train or bus with any of the Nagoya City Transpiration Bureau discounted 24-hour or Saturday/Sunday day tickets, then just show that ticket at the entrance to get in for just 240 yen. See Tokugawa-en’s website for other combination deals to other major cultural properties such as Nagoya Castle.
