Japan’s Meteorological Agency announced Monday that the annual rainy season ended today, which is 22 days earlier than usual. This marks the shortest rainy season on record lasting just 13 days since statistics started in 1951.
The rainy season officially ended, however storms are forecast for early next week. The rainy season’s traditional low pressure system is gone and a high pressure system is forecast to cover most of the Tokai area for the rest of this week and it will bring clear skies.
The rainy season in the Tokai region usually ends on July 19 in a typical year, which is about the same time the national holiday Marine Day occurs. The rainy season officially ended last year, 2021, on July 17th. The previous record for the shortest rainy season was in 1964 when it lasted 21 days.
The Tokai region has also seen a drop in average rainy season’s rainfall with Nagoya’s average 97 milliliters drop to 82 milliliters and Gifu’s average dropping to just 44% of its average rainfall to just 53 milliliters.
