Nagoya Slashes Free HIV Testing to Only Weekends in Fifth Wave of COVID-19

Weekend testing is still available

The city of Nagoya stopped its weekday citywide HIV testing services on August 23 in response to the surge of COVID-19 infections. Previously, the city held testing on weekdays at ward based health centers on weekdays.

Weekend testing is still available but the location for testing on the second and fourth Sundays has been moved to the meeting rooms (研修室) on Nadia Park Building’s 9th floor. The first and third Saturday location remains at the Public Health Association Inc. (公民健康協会) in Nakamura Ward. The free and anonymous testing still needs a reservation either by phone or the online system.

Nagoya City has 1,577 persons who are HIV-positive which includes 229 non-Japanese, according to Aichi Prefecture’s statistics. Of those infected, 82% are between 20 and 49 years old. The same age group accounts for 65% of COVID-19 infections during the current Fifth Wave. In comparison, the same age group has been consistently growing in COVID-19 infections with 54% in the Fourth Wave and 48.6% in the Third Wave with overall numbers increasing.
